Historic sides and culture places in Vipiteno

On the tracks of a mining history

Sterzing/Vipiteno hides hidden cultural sides such as the pedestrian zone in the historic center or the Holy-Ghost-Church by the main place, the town hall, the H. Multscher and City Museum are worth a visit. There are also to be seen many halations of the historical townhouses, which are accessible via the galleries with their beautiful vaults.

The city hall

The city hall was built according to the plan of architect Jörg Kölderer. Still today it witnesses the richness and classical urban design of the modern period. In addition to the original gothic hall, where the town council still meets today, it is worth visiting the inner courtyard with a copy of the Stele of God Mithra.

The Holy Ghost Church

The church is located in the main square in Sterzing and it's one of the best preserved gothic churches in Southtyrol. The frescoes from Hans from Bruneck, which are strongly influenced by the style of Giotto di Bondone's works, are: the proclamation, the Mount of Olives, the Kiss of Judas, Christ in front of Pilate, the crowning of thorns, the resurrection of Christ and, on the wall to west, the Universal Judgment.

The Multscher and City Museum

The museum houses the altar boards of the famous painter Hans Multscher of Ulm, and other fragments that once adorned the parish church. Also interesting are the chambers where once the Teutonic Knights masters lived and the adjacent Church of St. Elisabeth, which is accessible only by the museum.

General description

The Multscher and Town Museum of Sterzing is housed in the Deutschhaus, a former Teutonic Order commandery next to the parish church. The museum houses the largest part of the former late Gothic altarpiece by the famous sculptor and painter Hans Multscher from Ulm. The altar wings are amongst the most important works of art in the southern German region and are considered the last major work of the Ulm master. The altar was created between 1456 and 1459 for the parish church „Unsere liebe Frau im Moos”.

Furthermore, the museum houses imperial fiefs and confirmation documents, privileges and regulations of various craft guilds, seals, guild signs, and guild chests. The premises themselves are already a sight worth seeing and worth a visit. They serve as an information source about the local history of the Brothers and Knights of the Teutonic Order (1254-1809). Particularly noteworthy is the "Count's Room" („Grafenzimmer"), where valuable ceiling frescoes from four different South Tyrolean monasteries are located, and on the walls, there is a panoramic view of the Sterzing basin with culturally significant details. An insight into St. Elisabeth's Church completes the visit.

The museum is about five minutes away from the town center of Sterzing.

Guided tours

Discover Sterzing / Vipiteno in Southtyrol, one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, with our guide who will take you to a bygone era and will tell you in detail about the development of the alpine town. From the history through the various architectural styles, the relics of mining and the influences of the various eras. Guided tours are available from early May to late October every Friday.
Meeting point: 4.00 pm, in front of the Sterzing tourist office at Stadtplatz, the main square of the town; duration 1 hour.
Guided tours are held only in German or Italian.
